Boosting Employee Moral Within Your Workplace

With all the world has thrown at us, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that your workplace employee morale levels have dropped. As the employer, you’ll be aware that low morale can result in an increase in resignations, conflicts, and absenteeism, along with decreased productivity and missed deadlines.

The good news is that you can act today to begin raising employee morale and we’ll get you started.

9 Ways to Boost Employee Morale

Motivated employees (and it’s the same for employers too!) are more engaged, work faster, be cost conscious, are happy and more productive. Here are nine tips to boost morale within your workplace:

  1. Communicate often and well – have an open-door policy and actively communicate with staff. Set clear goals and meet regularly to track progress. Share the vision and goals for your business with everyone in the workplace.
  2. Be honest and transparent – if things are going well, tell employees. Likewise, if they’re not, let them know too. Let them know what’s happening and keep them up to date.
  3. Give recognition when due – when employees do a great job, make sure they and everyone else knows it. Recognition could be sharing on the business’ social media platforms or a team meeting, as well as a gift or cash bonus. Having an employee of the month is a great tool to use for this.
  4. Ask for and reflect upon employee feedback – your employees know a lot, so encourage them to share it with you. Once received, work through and reflect upon it, then make changes if required.
  5. Engage in team building activities – take the team out to lunch, a round of mini golf or have a regular office morning tea shout.
  6. Give employees ownership – give responsibility to employees, letting them make decisions and take ownership of specific tasks.
  7. Offer professional development – employee engagement and motivation occur when employees are challenged and respected. Offer them education in areas that they enjoy or need upskilling in, with the aim of increasing their knowledge to gain additional workplace status and remuneration.
  8. Take breaks – regular breaks are important for everyone! Make sure there are no skipped lunch breaks. Encourage everyone to stop, leave their desks and take their breaks, you included.
  9. Go green – add some greenery around the workplace with indoor plants. Research has shown that people in workplaces report increased mood levels and enjoyment at work.
