Outside Your Comfort Zone: Why Growth Lives at the Edge

Outside Your Comfort Zone: Why Growth Lives at the Edge, Not the Middle

Some parts of running a business feel energising, while others feel flat, and it is not really about which tasks you enjoy most. Psychologists have studied this pattern for decades, under different names. One idea is called flow. Another is the learning zone just beyond your current ability. Despite the different labels, the common thread is simple: people engage most fully at the edge of what they already know. In other words, real growth tends to happen outside your comfort zone, not in the safety of routine.

The Feeling Outside Your Comfort Zone Is a Signal

That slightly stretched feeling can seem like a warning, but in practice it usually means something different. It often points to exactly where your next bit of progress is waiting. Two other feelings are worth noticing as well. Boredom, for example, usually means you have mastered something and it is time to move on. Overwhelm, on the other hand, usually means you have taken on too much, too fast. Either way, both feelings tell you where you actually sit, rather than giving you a reason to avoid discomfort altogether.

Why Business Owners Retreat Too Soon

The common mistake is reading discomfort backwards. Something feels uncertain, maybe a new financial system, a bigger decision, or a conversation you have been putting off. The instinct is then to retreat to what feels safe and familiar. That retreat brings relief in the moment, but it is usually where progress stalls. Growth was never likely to happen in the part of your business that already feels comfortable.

Finding the Edge, Outside Your Comfort Zone

So where does this leave you? Start by noticing where you feel most engaged in your work right now. Notice, too, where you keep finding reasons to put something off. That edge is usually the more useful place to spend your energy. It might be a bigger strategic decision, a first look at proper forecasting, or a conversation about where the business is really heading.

In fact, the decision you are avoiding is often the one that feels outside your comfort zone. That is often exactly where a second set of eyes helps most. We are always happy to talk it through, so get in touch with the team at MBP.
